Microsoft Excel – Text to columns

Text to columns is useful feature in Microsoft Excel that allows that allows us to parse data in a single cell to many cells based on a defined delimiter. To do this carry out the following steps:

  1. Highlight the cell or column that you are wanting to parse.
  2. Select the ‘Data’ tab and then click ‘Text to Columns’.
  3. In the new widow select the ‘Delimited’ option and then click ‘Next’.
  4. In the next window define your delimiter, this will be the character at which point the cell will break in the next column. Then click ‘Next’.
  5. In the final window click on the ‘Finish’ button.

You will then be returned to your spreadsheet with the cell(s) split in to new columns at every instance of our given delimiter.
